1. Objectives
By the end of the lecture, students should be able to:
- Define CPR.
- Identify components of CPR.
- Understand the indications and steps for performing CPR.
2. Introduction
- Critical Importance: Continuous blood supply (oxygen + nutrients) is vital for cellular function.
- Cardiopulmonary Arrest: Sudden cessation of heart/lung function leads to brain damage within 4–6 minutes and irreversible damage/death after 8–10 minutes.
- CPR: A life-saving technique to restart the heart and maintain circulation/oxygenation until advanced care (e.g., defibrillation) is available.
3. Definition of CPR
- CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation): Clinical intervention involving chest compressions and rescue breaths to sustain life during cardiac/respiratory arrest.
- Defibrillator: Electrical device used to restart the heart (if available).
4. Goal of CPR
- Maintain adequate circulation.
- Ensure airway patency.
